Recent collaborations/performances with Racoco Productions

I am excited to continue collaborating with Rachel Cohen of Racoco Productions and this year we are exploring the various visual, conceptual, and narrative possibilities of seamless backdrop paper.

In a surprising twist I am also now collaborating as a "dancer"! (in quotes as my efforts are in the most amateur sense possible). It's been an unexpected but fun development and at this point I have six performances under my belt.

Below are images from four different iterations of our performances with paper. The settings varied widely, which contributed to the uniqueness of each piece.

Our most recent presentation was "Paper Trail," at the Strand Theater in Plattsburgh in upstate New York on August 1 & 2. It was part of "Fete de Danse", a presentation of three dance companies organized by Brooklyn dance and art organization, Norte Maar. The Strand Theater is a recently renevated grand old theater and it was an amazing experience to perform in that beautiful space and with two other incredible dance companies.  When we weren't rehearsing, making paper costumes, and performing, we had a great time hanging out by lovely Lake Champlain and exploring the lovely town of Plattsburgh. As it turns out, my grandfather had military training in Plattsburgh before World War II, so it was an interesting feeling to visit a town where he had been on an entirely different mission.

"Detritus" was a three-day event in Harlem which included 4 performances amid an ever-changing installation created by the accumulated remnants of each performance. We were able to present this through chashama's Summer 2014 Summer Performance Series, which pairs artists and performers with empty spaces throughout the city.

We also presented a more formal piece, "Paper Work" at an official dance venue: Leimay at CAVE. Ironically enough it's the venue where I saw Rachel's production of "Tilt" in 2012 which I later mentioned in an online interview that Rachel found and which led her to ask me to collaborate with her. Fate has come full circle.

Dancers are Rachel Cohen, Masumi Kishimoto, Remi Harris, and Stephanie Beck. All photos are by Raul Zbengheci, courtesy of Leimay/CAVE.

We presented the first paper performance, "Paper Trail," at Maria Hernandez Park as part of Bushwick Open Studios in May. We invited kids to come help us create a tearing and crumpling whirlwind at the end of the piece, which was a big hit.

Dancers: Rachel Cohen, Masumi Kishimoto, Stephanie Beck.

Paper Work, performed on June 19, 2014, 8pm at CAVE's Soak Festival58 Grand Street, Williamsburg. $17 suggested donation.

On a shared program with Masanori Asahara and Moeno Wakamatsu, Racoco Productions will show a new collaboration with visual artist Stephanie Beck and composer Lynn Wright, Paper Work, charting ideas of "progress," territorial expansion, discipline, and disorder.

Tactile trios of sound, paper, and the body continuously create and destroy shifting landscapes, echoing the tension between the desire for civilization and the constant call to new territory.

Detritus, a three-day long performance and installation, June 21 - 23, 1351 Amsterdam Avenue, New York, NY. Courtesy of Summer Performance Series 2014

June 21, performance at 3 p.m., installation open until 8 p.m.

June 22, installation open noon to 8 p.m., performances at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

June 23, installation open 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., performance at 8 p.m.

Visual artist Stephanie Beck and Racoco will follow up their premiere performance at CAVE's SOAK festival with an installation and series of performances at 1351 Amsterdam Avenue in Harlem as part of chashama's Summer Performance Series.

Continuing their exploration of paper, "Detritus" starts in an empty space and during a series of performances
slowly transforms into a variety of paper landscapes. Walk past the window, come inside to interact with the installation, and stay for a performance!

"Cells" included in Paper Play, Sandu Publishing, 2014

My multi-form piece, "Cells," 2012-2013, has been included in Sandu Publishing's new book on paper art, Paper Play

The book has not been released yet but can be pre-ordered on Amazon, if you search Paper Play Sandu.

I can't wait to see it!

Who knows Heidi Bucher?

I recently discovered the work of amazing Swiss artist Heidi Bucher at the Swiss Institute in Soho and was SO inspired that I wrote a small piece about the exhibition on my art/travel blog:

Please also visit the Swiss Institute and for more information, and go see the show, if possible! It is on view through May 11.

"Little Houses" travel to France

The group exhibition, "Architectures de papier", which first opened at Cite de l'architeture et du patrimoine, in Paris in 2012 continues to travel through France, landing at the lovely Chateau de la Roche Jagu in Bretagne (Brittany) from May 8 - October 5 of this year.

They will be including photographs and video from my "Little Houses" project in Fort Collins, Colorado, in 2011. Eastward ho!
